Located on the hilltop between the Val di Chiana and the Val D'Orcia, the appearance of Montepulciano has remained unchanged since it was founded in the Middle Ages. In the 16th century, Montepulciano experienced a flourishing architectural period, challenging, with the outstanding beauty of its private and public buildings, the city of Siena and even Florence itself.

The works made between the 14th and the 16th century bear witness to the economic and social power of the patrician families of the city, and had Montepulciano go down in history as "the pearl of the 16th century". Climbing the steep roads of the town, the visitor will be able to admire the beautiful buildings and churches showing the unrivalled genius of the most important architects of the Renaissance.

The wonderful Piazza Grande, with its Duomo, whose facade has never been completed, and the Palazzo Comunale, inspired by the Palazzo della Signoria in Florence, is a must for all visitors; the town is interspersed with Renaissance mansions, surrounded by numerous "minor" buildings (that elsewhere would be of great importance). In the valley below the town, in an unique panorama, rises the outstanding church of the Madonna di San Biagio with its elegant structure, which was a source of inspiration for Saint Peter's in Rome.

Montepulciano is also a thriving cultural town: one of its most important events is the "Cantiere Internazionale d'Arte" as well as the staging of the "Bruscello". Along with the agricultural economy, also tourism stands among its most important resources: of relevant note are the Terme of Montepulciano (a local spa), located in the borough of S. Albino, where one can benefit from the healthy properties of mineral waters and mud baths. Nearby, there are indoor and outdoor swimming pools, tennis courts and riding schools. Local restaurants offer the typical dishes of the area, simple but extremely tasty, to be accompanied by tastings of Vino Nobile.

The town of Montepulciano is linked to other fascinating towns through a harmonious and charming landscape that can be considered as the real heart of Tuscany.

Nearby are:

Pienza (10 KM), the birthplace of Pope Pius II, is the home of the famous sheep's cheese, the "pecorino di Pienza".

Montalcino (30 KM), another charming little town well-known for its renowned wine, the "Brunello di Montalcino".

Monticchiello (12 KM), remarkable medieval borough where in August and at Christmas the "Teatro Povero" is staged.

Cortona (35 KM), a town famous for its antiques and local handicrafts.

Bagno Vignoni, featuring a natural hot water spring.

Chianciano (7 KM), one of the most famous and important spas in Italy, renowned for the therapeutic treatment of liver conditions.

Siena, San Gimignano, Florence, Arezzo, Perugia, Assisi are only some of the cities that can be easily reached from Montepulciano.

This is the reason why Podere Elisa is the right place for those who, during the day, love excursions and in the evening wish to relax in a comfortable and homey atmosphere.

Other distance:
Montepulciano (1,5 KM), Chiusi (26 KM), Montefollonico (10 KM), Sarteano (26 KM).
